Summer Media Organizing Project 2006

Posted on 25 Feb 2006 in Radio Rootz, Rootz Stories, Summer Internship

In the summer of 2006, Radio Rootz partnered with South Asian Youth Action, Adelante Alliance, and the Prison Moratorium Project to create three youth documentaries.
The documentaries are being used to support the organizing campaigns led by the SMOP partners.

“Uncovering the Hidden World of South Asian Youth and Gangs”

Gang involvement and gang violence isn’t expected from these groups, but to the surprise of many, it exists and is growing rapidly among youth in NYC. This documentary does not provide solutions to this problem, but introduces and analyzes the problem from its roots. This fourteen-minute piece, consisting primarily of youth voices, will allow one to reach a unique level of realization about gangs among immigrant communities.

“Alcoholism in the Latin Community”

Alcoholism in the Latin community is a growing problem. Communities and families are being torn apart as men throw their lives and hard earned money into alcohol. Explore the stories of several alcoholics, possible causes of alcoholism, and ways to battle those causes by listening to this documentary. Take a look at an issue that’s going un-discussed all too often.

“Queering Out Prisons: The Story of the LGBT Struggle on the Inside”

“Sit back, relax, and absorb some truth” as our knowledgeable narrator and her inquisitive comrade steer us through the ins and outs of the prison industrial complex. Find out how the Queer Community is affected by jails and prisons and listen to formerly incarcerated LGBT
people tell their stories. This is a very raw and real 20 minutes, but it’s very worth your time.
