Bell
Multicultural High School is located in the Northwest neighborhood of
Columbia Heights.
The school reflects the diversity of the
neighborhood; most Bell students come from Central and South America,
while others come from African and Asian backgrounds. While
the neighborhood goes through gigantic economic transitions that
continue to displace low -to- moderate income individuals and families,
the school has maintained its commitment to serve the community it
started with despite moving to a state -of- the- art building 2 years
ago.
Radio Rootz is part of Bell’s multi-media after school arts program. The
program, led by teacher and veteran videographer Akeel Ali, includes
photography, djaying, video, and graffiti in its long list of media
skills students have the opportunity to learn. Luckily,
radio is included on that list and Rootz’s teacher Selina Musuta works
with 8 of Bell’s finest on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
In May, students completed their final pieces on their own on topics
ranging from the school’s uniform policy to what it means when a
parent’s child turns 18.
