2010 Digital Expansion Fellows

Manuel Diaz is a Mathematics Major attending Hunter College.  Using Logic, he helps redefine Media Production. He has been with People’s Production House for three years and plans to continue his pursuit for media justice.  Currently, Manuel is working with the Digital Expansion Fellowship.  He enjoys guitar playing, sarcasm, and long walks on the beach.

Jennifer Liu is currently studying for her BA in English at Hunter College. Her interest in media began four years ago when she joined Global Action Project (GAP), creating films that related to issues that urban youth face. Through GAP, she was introduced to People’s Production House, where she joined their Digital Expansion Fellowship for the summer of 2010.

In 2009, Samantha Muilenburg moved to New York City to study film at New York University. She started working at People’s Production House as an intern with Radio Rootz ‘n Schoolz and now is a fellow in the Digital Expansion Fellowship. Samantha started working on media policy with Reel Grrls in Seattle where she created a documentary and website about media ownership.

Marya Tambawala was born and raised in Queens, New York. She is currently studying Communications and Business at the Macaulay Honor’s College at Queens College. When she is not in class, she works as a tutor and peer counselor. Marya began working at People’s Production House in 2006 as a Radio Rootz intern, continued as a Senior Leader, and is now a Digital Expansion Fellow. She spent a semester studying and traveling in Southeast Asia and plans to travel more in the future.

  

Medios Caminantes Network Launches Anti-Racist Radio Action

Medios Caminantes Network, a collection of Spanish-language media makers across the nation and Latin America born from this years Allied Media Conference, will be broadcasting a 12 hours of live radio program from 10 different cities in the United States and Mexico. With the participation of 15 immigrant organizations, the all day Spanish-language broadcast is a protest against the racist policies of the government of Arizona and the absence of a clear immigration policy at the federal level. Community News Production Institute reporter Zoilo Blas and PPH’s Carlos Pareja will be participating in the broadcast from Make the Road/Se Hace Camino, Jackson Heights. Paterson Pats Down the Stop and Frisk

NYPD in action

On July 16, Governor Patterson signed a law prohibiting the New York Police Department from storing names and addresses of innocent people stopped and frisked. But police commissioner Raymond Kelly has expressed concerns that the new law could hinder NYPD’s efforts to fight crimes. CNPI reporter Christine Lewis wanted to know what ordinary New Yorkers thought of the law. This story first aired on WBAI 99.5FM.

Arizona Law Turns Presumed Immigrants Into Criminal Suspects

Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070, goes into effect later this week. The law, which criminalizes undocumented immigrants in the state of Arizona, mandates that police officers verify immigration status when “reasonable suspicion” exists that a person is undocumented. Alessandra Soler Meetze, the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union-Arizona, spoke with CNPI reporters Christine Lewis and Rob Robinson on WBAI 99.5FM to explains some of the ramifications of the law, and its potential impact on those presumed to be immigrants.
