Meet the Radio Rootz Summer Interns

Posted on 03 Aug 2010 in SMOP NYC

One of the first radio exercises for the summer interns is to create an audio bio. They learn to write about their interests and accomplishments in a way that is appropriate for radio, voice and record it, and digitally edit their narration with the music of their choice.

This year, the eight interns kick butt in multiple languages and art forms: we have a brown belt in Karate, multi-linguists, graffiti art, a basketball star. There’s more, but we’ll let you hear for yourself.

This will be Angela’s second summer with Radio Rootz, after her first
Rootz class in 2007 at Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School. She
has produced stories about how nothing can hold her back, the toxic waste in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and how youth organizing makes a difference.

Oscar is a part of Youth Action Changes Things, which is a part of La Unión in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Radio is not the only thing that you’ll find Oscar involved in because he’s a really active guy.

Reena just finished South Asian Youth Action’s ARISE community organizing program. She’s looking to hone her radio skills because she hopes to pursue journalism in the future.

JJ just became a part of Radio Rootz this year at Manhattan Comprehensive Day and Night High School. In their final radio project, he and his classmates figure out just what it takes to get into college.

Somehow Rootz was lucky enough to have Frankie join us this summer, because he wasn’t in any of our school or community organizing groups. This will be his first year making radio.

Elizabeth is a part of YACT –Youth Action Changes Things– which is a part
of La Unión in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.  Even though
this is Elizabeth’s first year making radio, don’t let that fool you.
She’s really talented.

Siobhan just completed ARISE, South Asian Youth Action‘s community organizing program, and she is super capable and ready to create radio for her community.

Before Kim heads to college to hit the books and courts, she decided to spend one more summer with Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice through Radio Rootz. Kim has made various forms of media but this will be her first year producing radio.

*Audio bio coming soon*
