CNPI Monthly Radio Show

On January 26, the Community News Production Institute in partnership with Global Movements, Urban Struggles aired its monthly radio show on WBAI 99.5FM. This month’s show highlights the effort of workers of Brooklyn-based supermarket, Golden Farm; the release of a report by Picture the Homeless and Hunter College; and the increasing violence facing students in Mexico. Also featured were voices of New Yorkers reacting to the Obama administration’s handling of the economy, and job creation.

Report Says City Has More Vacant Buildings and Lots To End Homelessness

In a newly released report, Picture the Homeless and Hunter College say NYC can end homelessness by using its vacant buildings and lots. Kendall Jackman, Housing Campaign Leader at Picture the Homeless, and Tom Angotti from the Hunter College Center for Community Planning & Development came on WBAI 99.5FM to talk about the report. At the Golden Farm Supermarket In Brooklyn, Everything Isn’t Golden for Workers

Shoppers enjoy the variety of ethnic food and fresh produce the Brooklyn-based supermarket offers. But some of the workers say the owner has been exploiting them for years, paying them below minimum wages and denying them overtime. Lucas Sanchez, an organizer with New York Communities for Change along with Roberto Ramirez came on WBAI 99.5FM to talk about their efforts to winning better working conditions for the more than 25 employees of the store.
