Radical, black, gay, American, essayist, novelist, playwright and poet James Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York. Baldwin is known for his bold works confronting race and sexuality. He has written passionate pieces calling attention to the experience of gay and bisexual men, and to the relationship between white and black Americans. The controversial nature of Baldwin’s’ literature as well, as his close ties to black community leaders, attracted the attention of the FBI, who kept an extensive file on him. I guess challenging American racial and sexual discourse is like a crime or something.
