The Australian state of South Australia and its capital Adelaide were officially proclaimed by Britain. The state of South Australia was founded by British settles, who planned to make it a colony of free immigrants, promising civil liberties and freedoms to all its inhabitants. Although the territory in South Australia was deemed 'free-land' by the South Australian Act two years earlier, Adelaide was known to be home to the Kaurna (Gowna) Aboriginal tribe. The traditional lifestyle of the Kaurna (Gowna) people was destroyed within 20 years of European settlement.
