People's Production House and Newsmotion present: An Encounter with Simone Weil
When: Nov 15 2011 07:00 PMWhere: New York University, Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts 1 Washington Place (at Broadway), NYC
In her short life, Simone Weil (1909-1943) fought in the Spanish Civil War, worked as a machine operator and farm laborer, debated Trotsky, taught high school students and union members, and was part of the French Resistance. Drawing on current news and observational footage, Haslett’s narration draws provocative comparisons between Weil’s insight and the world today. Join us for a special sneak preview of Julia Haslett's award-winning new documentary about the French philosopher, writer and activist Simone Weil followed by a discussion moderated by Newsmotion with contemporary thinkers and activists about the role witness-bearing plays in effecting social change.
Newsmotion is an innovative global news platform that promotes digital media literacy, broadcasts independent voices and produces original multimedia content. Newsmotion is a venture formed in partnership with People’s Production House (PPH), a (nonprofit) journalism training and production institute that teaches students, immigrants, and working families how to produce ground-breaking news critical to a vibrant democracy. Our partnership is based on the shared belief in the importance of a free, independent press and the urgent need for expanding the capacity of under-represented voices. www.newsmotion.org www.peoplesproductionhouse.org

Jahn and Rothenberg will debut a multimedia project produced with Domestic Workers United that gets the word out about the state-wide landmark bill of rights achieved in 2010 for nannies, housekeepers, and elder care givers. This project involves innovation in forms of information exchange, broadcast, and access; it strives towards context-appropriate DIY technology that is sustainable for the groups for whom they are intended (low-wage workers and immigrants).

Of the 37 percent of U.S. adults that don’t have high speed Internet access, the vast majority are people of color, rural, poor, migrants and refugees, and people who speak languages other than English. While some take this piece of technology for granted- for prisoners, low-income communities, immigrants, youth and communities of color—phone calls and mobile access are a privilege, not a right. In particular, Black and Latino communities are more likely than the general population to access the Web via cellular phones and need strong wireless protections. A new "digital divide" has emerged with Latinos and African Americans being the hardest hit by the recent FCC vote on net neutrality. During our interactive panel you can learn about the recent FCC vote and the laws and policies that most affect your community-and how they relate to jobs, housing, healthcare, immigration and education-as well as what tools you will need and what campaigns you can join to create social change.
