The four officers hurled Jateik against a brick wall, wrestled him onto the sidewalk, and kicked and beat him. The NYPD later claimed they suspected him of drug possession.

In a video shot by an onlooker, the officers can be seen landing heavy blows all over Jateik’s body, including Jateik’s back and head. As others on the street beg the officers to stop, one officer screams “Move back!” and threatens the person taking the video with pepper spray. Jateik was ultimately handcuffed, arrested, and taken to jail while bleeding from the head and elsewhere. When he was finally given medical treatment he had to get multiple stitches in his arm and multiple staples in the back of his head. Veteran eteran civil rights lawyer Michael Tarif Warren and Gideon Orion Oliver, President of the New York City Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.

On Feb. 6, Jateik was released on $10,000 bail. More than 50 of his friends and family members cheered as he exited the Bronx Supreme Court. Reed’s attorneys, Michael Warren and Gideon Oliver, sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo that urged him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the officers involved in the beating. See a slideshow of the Bronx protest.
