Francisco Madero issued the Plan de San Luis Potosi and effectively ushered in the Mexican Revolution. The Plan de San Luis Potosi called for the re-institution of democracy and the destruction of Porfirio Diaz's authoritarian presidency through violent direct action on the part of the Mexican people. Madero and his followers denounced the Presidency of Porfirio Diaz, who had seriously manipulated the elections of 1910 in his favor. Diaz also heavily supported US foreign policy in the region, which the revolutionary leaders were firmly against. Under the Diaz regime, Mexico had been increasingly relaxing trade restrictions and opening its economy to foreign exploitation.
