On August 22, competing rallies were held in Lower Manhattan over the proposed Islamic Cultural Center to be constructed two blocks from the site of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The issue was thrust into the national spotlight several weeks ago after a right-wing blogger branded the facility the “ground zero mosque." About 1.8 million children have a parent in the state or federal prison, 65% of women in the state prison are mothers, and 55% are fathers.
As many as 70% of the children of incarcerated parents will become involved in the criminal justice system, either as a juvenile or as an adult unless effective intervention strategies are set in place. But there is a group just working to break that cycle. CNPI reporter Julia Paul of Families For Freedom sat down with Sharon Content, the founder of Children of Promise, a NYC-based nonprofit committed to embracing and empowering children of incarcerated parents to break the cycle of inter-generational involvement in the criminal system.

The Community News Production Institute in partnership with Global Movement Urban Struggles airs its monthly show on WBAI 99.5FM on Tuesday September 29th at 10AM.
This month's show features Sekou Siby of Restaurant Opportunities Center who highlights some of the issues restaurant workers face in NYC. Also featured on the show is Sharon Content of Children Of Promise who sheds lights on some of the work his organization does for children whose parents are incarcerated, and Larry Holmes of Bail Out the People Movement Solidarity Center comes back to the Tent City his organization erected at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mike Fillipo of Stella D'Oro Workers wraps up the show with details on the protest held by employees of the company trying to prevent its relocation to Ohio.
